One Plus One Equals One .... these words were sung by Rod Boucher, one-man-band and occasional warm up act to ACDC. While they may not be mathematically accurate, they do express the nature of our existence as differentiated beings that are all part of the one living body. This mystery of unity and differentiation is embodied in a strand of handmade beads. Each bead has its own unique shape, size, texture, and colour, and yet they are all joined on the one strand.
Each of my beads is individually handmade from wood, seeds, flowers and occasionally non-botanical materials like stone, shell, glass, or metal. I use materials that I know, that grow in abundance, and that have resonances that are beneficial to the wearer. Melia azedarach, for example, is one of the seeds I have worked with the longest. Known as the 'rosary tree' across South East Asia, I met her after a counselling session in which we talked about vulnerability, so to me she is 'the vulnerability tree'. I also use beads handmade in India using materials that I know and love.
Each strand of beads contains a story of plants, place and people. These stories connect the wearer to a wider network of beings within which to seat their own stories of connection. These stories are like prayers to carry with you wherever you go.
