A strand of beads embodies the mystery of our existence as differentiated beings that are part of the one living body of the earth and of the life force - God, Allah, Prana, Chi - that animates and sustains all. This mystery of unity and differentiation takes shape as each bead with its own unique shape, size, texture, and colour, is joined on the one continuous strand.
Beads are a form of adornment and as such are a marker of social, cultural and political status. Beads have been traded as currency. And beads form one of the oldest tools for the remembering and recitation of words, phrases, and other sounds uttered as devotion.
Physics uses two concepts to describe the behaviour of matter and energy - particles and waves. When we use beads as a device to mark the recitation of sacred sound, whether it be a japamala, a rosary, a misbah, or an unconventional or unique strand, we merge these two concepts into a single act. This practice deeps our understanding of the nature of matter and energy and gives us access to complex and layered understandings of our reality. Using beads for the recitation of sacred sound is a complete spiritual path.
My people came here from Europe and the UK in freedom and in doing so, knowingly or unknowingly, created suffering for Indigenous populations for whom this is, was and always will be their land. I give respect to elders who were, are and shall be, whose continuing presence is a source of wellbeing for all.
